Lagarde: IMF could be based in BeijingThe chief of the International Monetary Fund says the organization could be based in Beijing in a decade if China continues its strong economic growth.
IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde made the remarks on Monday at a symposium held in Washington DC where the IMF is based.
Lagarde said she sees the possibility of relocating the IMF headquarters from Washington DC to China in 10 years' time.
Sources say that such a move is unlikely for the time being, but Lagarde's comments reflect that China is increasing its presence in the international financial order.
IMF rules say that its principal office should be in the territory of the member with the largest quota.
Currently, the country with the largest quota is the US, with 17.46 percent. Japan is second with 6.48 percent, and China follows with 6.41 percent.
